The Magic 14 Ladies of the PeacePond Eco Center

The Name "PeacePond"

The Philippines has 7,107 islands and more than 170 dialects.  The Visayas island is where our fishpond property is located. Our dialect is called "Ilonggo".

In the Visayas island, "fishpond" is pronounced "pispond".  It was but natural that "pis" became "Peace" as it appropriately signified the life PeacePond's founders wanted to lead.

The PeacePond Eco Center is part of the PeacePond property in Alo, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, Philippines.  The organization was born on February 2004 when Jet and Checcs semi-retired from Manila to the fishing village called Alo.  The advocacy of Solid Waste Management (SWM) came from their involvement in the National SWM Conference and the Nationwide Search for Model Barangay (village) through mentors Odette Alcantara and Binggirl Clemente.

The couple gave the first seminar on solid waste management to some 26 folks of the community.  It wasn't long before the women members and their husbands constructed a simple Eco Center to store waste materials from the town's residents.

Coastal cleanups in neighboring public beaches and active promotion for solid wastemanagement came next.  Then the Eco Center started its Community Projects  Division which conceptualized and created products made from recycled materials and solid waste.

The Eco Center also started giving free solid waste management seminars to interested public and private sectors.  These seminars generally featured a full-day lecture coupled with interactive activities, an information kit, audio-visual presentations, visual exhibits, active participation by the Eco Center ladies and a graduation ceremony. These seminars included those in Apo Island (Dauin, Negros Occidental), Bethany Court (Bacolod City), the Municipality of Binalbagan and Barangay Payao.  The office staff of BISCOM Inc. and Rural Health Care Workers of Binalbagan were also recipients of the seminar. The PeacePond Eco Center also gave a two-day Solid Waste Management (SWM) Primer and Integrated SWM 12-month Planning Workshop for the Metro Third District of Negros Occidental.  This included the cities of Silay, Talisay, Victorias and the towns of E.B. Magalona and Murcia.  The primer was ably managed by Mayor Diding Gamboa, Enviro Express and Anita Celdran of SPM International.

The Eco Center was featured in the TV talkshow "Amiga" and TV news "TV Patrol" of ABS-CBN Bacolod.  GMA 7 Manila reporter Mariz Umali  likewise interviewed the members.  A full-page feature was also done by local daily The Visayan Daily Star on the eco center's achievements.

Our products have also been exhibited at the Gaisano Trade Fair, BInalbagan 2004 and 2005 Fiesta and the Negros Panaad Festival 2005.

On June 2005, Jet and Checcs eventually realized their dream of helping their town Binalbagan realize its SWM program.  They were appointed NGO representatives of the Solid Waste Action Board-Binalbagan (SWAB-Bin) headed by Mayor Emmanuel Aranda.  PeacePond  was responsible for the integrated Information, Education and Communication Campaign (IECC) of the board.  Part of the IECC included the Kapehan sa Merkado (Coffee Date at the Market), school symposium attended by thousands of students, a series of barangay forum, billboards, drop down banners, flyers, instructional VCDs in the local dialect, a town-wide SWM manual and re-korida (public address) system. Together with SWAB-Bin, PeacePond pushed for the construction of the first Eco Park in South Negros, 12 Barangay (village) Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and the investiture of the local Eco Police.
